About Decorative Concrete Overlays

Many might have heard or know little about Decorative Concrete. In the beginning decorative concrete started off as a cement truck pulling up with a colored mix of concrete then when slightly set a rubber stamp was used to create a pattern such as brick. Even though this old-fashion system still is used today at AZCST we do Decorative Concrete Overlays.

The Decorative Concrete Floors that we design and install, are overlaid the top of existing concrete or wood subfloors, which in essence is a procedure that looks like real tile, real brick, real stone and real wood just to name a few.  The treatment is so mind-blowing that you will think the costs in doing so would be way to expensive.

Since decorative concrete is a mystery to most remodelers, builders and homeowners I want to take a few minutes in explaining what floors are very cost effective in the remodeling industry.  We all want to have a beautiful floor for-less, especially during these times where many are buying and flipping homes, fixing up your rental properties. Whatever the reason might be the beauty we can create using decorative concrete overlays is endless and cost effective.

Did you know that you can have your garage floor look like this Thin Finish for as low as $3.50 Per SF (integral color only + deco band extra - prep work extra). For Ex-large areas we typically can go as low $3.00 Per SF - all depending on how much prep work is needed and the size of the area, topcoat & colorcoat. Smaller areas the price is a bit higher but maily depending on the SF and prep work. Decorative concrete was initially designed to be install over sound structure concrete and every day new systems are being developed to lower the cost of installing decorative concrete over wood subfloors. One thing to remember in the decorative concrete overlays, you can mix and match colors and patterns to create a floor that is unique in every way.

A very good look (above) for a garage floor at an unbelievable low price in the Integral Color Thin Finish Overlay, it's fast (usually done in two days) durable, scratch resistance. At 4800 PSI before sealer you can drive cars and trucks over it and not chip, scratch or peal the surface.

How about a flagstone look for $4.00 SF (depending of quantity & prep work & coloring choice), now please don't think these are the colorFlagstone Looks you have to use as we can make the colors to match your home, remember the sky is the limit when it comes to colors and designs. Price also based on grout color and top coat finish.

For those who like to browse the internet I would highly recommend you go to Elite Crete Systems for in-depth information and hundreds of photos that are quite impressive.

Here are some common terms used in the Decorative Concrete business. I wanted you to understand the basic terminology used in the business. Click on the bold word to see a quick picture for reference.

Epoxy Floor:  A two component 100% solids epoxy broadcast coat that can be filled with decorative chips and colored sand mixtures to provide an infinite selection of color schemes or patterns. It is 100% solids therefore has low odor, no flammability, and is self-leveling.

Broadcast:  To sprinkle solid particles on a surface.

Overlay:  To Install a new decorative surface atop an existing concrete surface.

Integral Color:  Color that is added during the mixing of your overlay product to produce a colored overlay as a whole.

Acid Stain:  A permanent stain that reacts chemically with concrete and polymer concrete overlays to add an antique coloring effect.

Pigmented Epoxy Floor:  A pigmented epoxy to be used as a protective top coat for commercial and industrial surfaces. Cures down to 40°F. Tack free in 8 hours depending on
temperature. Does not discolorate with direct sunlight.

Epoxy Reflector:  An ultra-fine, ground non-metallic, non-mica powder additive for adding to clear epoxy. Can be used to create an opaque or translucent finish. Epoxy Reflector can be used over existing formica countertops which is a very inexpensive way to remodel.

Stamped overlay:  To Install a new decorative surface atop an existing surface at a minimum of ¼” thick, when partially set, you use a rubber stamp to give your overlay the texture you want whether the look is a brick look, slate look, wood look and all with different patterns.

Stamped Overlay Rackout: To Install a new decorative surface atop an existing surface at a minimum of ¼” thick, when partially set, you use a rubber stamp to give your overlay the texture you want then the overlay is carved out creating natural looking grout lines and then grouted with natural tile grout.

Integral Thin finish Overlay: To Install a new two-coat decorative surface mixed with integral color atop an existing surface usually less than 1/8” thick.

Slate Trowel Thin Finish Overlay:  To Install a new two-coat decorative surface atop an existing surface usually less than 1/8” thick then skipped troweled so your finish looks like slate.

Tape-out Thin Finish Overlay:  To Install a new decorative surface atop an existing surface usually less than 1/8” thick.  Usually involves an integral color and using specialized tape or a template to form your pattern on the first coat and a second top-coat color usually consisting of polymer and acrylic coating to form an antique or natural stone look.

Splatter Coat (or Knockdown - Like Pool Cool Deck)Thin Finish Overlay:  To Install a new decorative surface atop an existing surface usually less than 1/8” thick.  Usually involves an integral color and using specialized tape or a template to form your pattern on the first coat and a second top-coat sprayed on to form a uniform surface which then can be either left rough for good traction on walkways and driveways or troweled smooth for surfaces that can be walked on in bare feet

Elite Crete Design Center: There is a large driveway where you can choose different colors and patterns and watch the changes as you select them to see if you like the look.
